about

Originally released on cassette in 1996, this contains recordings from 1993 to 1995. This is the enhanced digital version from 2004.

"Kraut" is an obvious reference to terms like "Kraut-Rock", "Krauts" as slang for Germans and to diverse German meanings of "Kraut" such as "cabbage" ("Kappes" in dialect, a synonym for nonsense), "herbs" or "weed".

Originally most of the tracks were intended as Hip-Hop backings. The idea was the creation of a locally based and specifically German variety of Hip-Hop. For this reason, only German sources were used. Most of them had never been seriously considered as a useful source before, as they belonged to genres that had been most hated by the German youth culture for decades. Besides Cologne carnival music, the common German mainstream Pop called "Schlager" (the word actually means "Hits") was recycled. But also some good old Kraut-Rock and Easy-Listening got incorporated into the mix, which was created on hardware dating from the late 80ies.

Originally distributed as a demo tape in summer 1996 it even caught the attention of some A&R managers at major labels. But the realization of plans faded, though the tape remained popular in small circles. Eventually, the collection of Hip-Hop backings was recognized as an instrumental Electronica album. Some say it pioneered the big beat genre.
